To compensate for the problem of alternating availability of power generated by solar installations or wind turbines, efficient and potent storage solutions are in demand. Thereby, unutilized power can be fed into the grid later and is not lost.
Energy storage devices on an electrochemical basis are ideally suited to offset the balance of supply and demand of electrical power. They absorb fluctuations in voltage ideally, they can handle charging and discharging cycles very well and can be used mobile. As smaller units, we can find them as batteries in smartphones and laptops. As bigger units, there is potential for optimization and highly interesting usage scenarios. As an example, the batteries of EV fleets could be used as energy storage devices.
Even compressed air can be used to store energy. In this process, air is compressed and crimped into underground caverns. If there is a shortage of power, the compressed air drives the turbines and thereby prompts the supply of energy. Pump storage plants work at an even larger scale: Unutilized power is used to pump water into a reservoir. During a power shortage, this water is drained to drive the turbines, again causing the generation of energy.
